PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl) refers to a group of over 8,000 chemicals that include some element of fluorine bonded with carbon. Many PFAS are found in everyday applications such as food packaging, cell phones, cleaning products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and water-resistant clothing. PFAS chemicals are often used to make finishes and products that provide unique properties such as resistance heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. Often used in textile applications to enhance water repellency, three PFAS chemicals, PFOA (Perflurooctanoic acid), PFOS (Perflurooctanesulfonic acid), and GenX have been identified to pose potential health or environmental risks.
Due to the potential health and safety risks, several states have enacted bans on certain products containing PFAS as soon as January 2025, while many other states have reporting requirements and/or pending legislation. PFAS will continue to be an active area of legislation and regulation at a federal and state level.
